The longtime equestrian estate of the late TV host Merv Griffin has hit the market in La Quinta, California for $36 million, the Wall Street Journal first reported.Â
Griffin â who created the game shows âJeopardy!â and âWheel of Fortuneâ â built the 10,000-square-foot property in the 1980s and wintered there until his death in 2007.
The current seller is real-estate investor Mark Majerovic, who paid Griffinâs estate $7 million for the 40-acre spread in 2013 and turned it into a $15,000-a-night rental property, which became popular among celebs especially during the Coachella music festival and while hosting the 8,000-some-person Revolve Festival.Â
âItâs a whoâs who of Hollywood,â Majerovic told the Journal. âWe turn the house into a giant nightclub that opens at 11PM until 4AM,â and has hosted everyone from Post Malone and Jack Harlow to the Kardashians and Katy Perry.Â
âYou name it, weâve hosted them at our property,â said Majerovic.
The 5,409-square-foot main house, which needed to be rebuilt after it burned down while still under construction in 1988, was inspired by Yves Saint Laurentâs famed Marrakesh home and is Moroccan themed.
As well, there are four circular, 500-square-foot guest âpodsâ on the property and two buildings â the 1,568-square-foot West Building and the 1,708-square-foot Gate House â for guests or staff, according to the listing.Â
On the grounds, which are surrounded by 12-foot walls and extensive landscaping, there is a 2.5-acre lake, an infinity pool, an orchard and stables that once held some 50 of Griffinâs horses, according to the Journal.Â
During the âMerv Griffin Showâ starâs ownership, the estate was much larger, spanning more than 240 acres, more than 200 of which were sectioned off into the master-planned Griffin Ranch community before he passed away. Â
The listing, featured on Top Ten Real Estate Deals, is held by Mauricio Umansky and Zach Goldsmith of The Agency.
It comes to market shortly after Majerovic withdrew a polarizing proposal to build tens of short-term rental homes on the estate.
